The 'Old Lammas' Fair
The 'Old Lammas' Fair is a traditional fair held in Ballycastle every year on the last Monday and Tuesday of August. It is associated with the Lammas harvest festival. The fair has been running for nearly 400 years, dating back to the 17th century.
The present day fair which is managed by the Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council includes, street entertainment and market stalls which attract thousands of people to the town without fail every year rain or shine. Two days of trading, bargaining, busking, horse trading, St Georges Market, the new art & craft area on Ann Street, amusements and street entertainment competitions all add to the atmosphere in this beautiful seaside resort of Ballycastle.
It’s an important event for Ballycastle, bringing an influx of visitors to the town. There’s also a large social element of the fair, with many past residents of Ballycastle returning to the town without fail every year to meet up with family and friends.
Ballycastle retains a friendly small town feel with coffee shops, restaurants, bars offering traditional Irish music, a seafront promenade, sandy beach, and excellent golf course.
Your shopping experience in Ballycastle is something rare in these days of high street multiples, because a majority of our shops are independently owned and they are then complimented by the additional Lammas Fair street stalls over the days of the fair.
Don’t forget to try the traditional Dulse & Yellow Man! And explore the town and streets lined with stalls! There’s something for everyone at the fair! Enjoy :)
